Pictures of Progress

Weaving-Warp going on the loom. It is now on and being woven.
Spinning-Hand spun slubby for a new scarf.
More spinning- My attempt to spin silk into silver. This is some cochineal dyed silk that was then "saddened" with iron. I almost exploded with excitement when the change took place. For those of you who have never dyed with cochineal before, it is a natural dye that is made up of dead bugs that you grind and boil. Not for the faint of heart. Nor for those that don't like "earthy" smells. The colours that you get are pinks, burgundy, and some purples, depending on what mordants you use. No mordant on silk with iron added gives you this lovely silver colour.
And here is progress of a different sort. Yup. Those are tulips. And that is snow. I took this picture yesterday and unfortunately the up dated photo would be just like the upper right hand corner. Because right now, it is snowing. Again.
Crap. I have been living under a rock today. Bill just came out and we are watching the news about the shootings in Virginia. This is starting to happen far to often. I feel so sorry for everyone involved.

Holy schmoly, that silver silk is gorgeous! What concentration of cochineal? And how much iron? It's stunning!

What a crazy world we live in. No place is safe.

The silk is such a lovely shade of silver. Your weaving is really taking off!

That silver silk is just beautiful!

And my tulips look just like your tulips. Sad, sad, sad.

That's some great silver you've got there. "Earthy" smells? I remember the first time I soaked silk before dyeing it. The smell was SO strong. Now, I like it.

Wow, I'd say you were successful with the silver. It reminds me of a sample I did blending gray angora bunny and white kid mohair.

And your weaving! Yum! Put those colors on the loom and I'm in love!

Speaking of "earthy" smells and mordants, I recall being astounded when Nicole (the elder) told me that urine (sheep's or men's) used to be used in dyeing wool.
Any plans on going that organic? :)

The blues of the warp are wonderful! Did you dye the warp as well?
I never thought about attempting a silver. It looks great. Lucky you!

I've never attempted weaving, but I see from your pictures, it is really involved. Such beautiful colors ... yummy looking in fact. BTW, I also love the smell of silk. But I don't know about "dead bugs" dye. LOL

Now I've got to learn to spin, thanks to this silver. What an astonishingly beautiful color!

And, to think, I thought the only modern use of cochineal was to go into SoBe drinks!
