Like an Ant

Most of the summer, I played at being the grasshopper from the kids tale of the grasshopper and the ant I did put in the garden and weeded a few times. We watered a couple of times. But basically the garden was just left to fend for itself. Then we went to the lake for a couple of weeks. My summer of leisure is now over. Now it is time for me to be the ant in the story.

I have been turning this....

into this....
Lady Ashburnham pickles (which originated here in Fredericton- Who knew?)
and this.....
Dills dills and more dills.
and this.
Pesto premix. basically 4 cups of packed basil and a cup of olive oil. These get thrown in the freezer and hauled out every now and then to make pesto. All I have to do is add 1 cup of each parmasan and pine nuts as well as garlic and a pinch of salt and we have pesto.

I have also been doing some weaving of the warps that I managed to dye during my artist in residence stint in July. I'll hopefully get some good pictures soon and share them with you all.

And there's the "sun dried" tomatoes that are now in the dehydrator. :-)

Good job Jackie. You put me to shame. Most of my harvest is still in the garden. I managed a few bags of frozen tomato for soup, Pesto premix and some Lady Ashburnham pickles but not to the extent that you did.

Lady Ashburnham is a must for me, it's my favorite pickle.

@ Mamoo

While it's true that Jackie is the commander in chief of this food processing brigade, she has had some extra hands helping with all of this bounty.

Mira and I did a lot of the picking (a trailer load of it on the weekend), and we helped out a lot with other things too, like peeling, coring and chopping cukes, washing tomatoes, getting them in the dehydrator, washing basil, washing potatoes, etc. The kids are getting a lot better at helping as they get older. Mira especially. She now understands quite well that if you want to be able to eat it, then there are things to do along the way to make it all happen.

What lovely photos! Just as pretty as the fibery kind.

Oh, can you FEEL the envy? To have storage! To have a garden! To have PICKLES and PESTO! Sigh. Some day....

And what about hot peppers? Anything interesting this year?

Presto, it's pesto! I love pesto, but not with all the pine nuts. Chris thinks I'm, well, nuts. :)

I have grapes festering in the back yard and no time to bring them in. I feel guilty about it, but at least the birds are having a picnic. good luck with all of that packing away!
