This sounds like a very worthy on going project. I just wish that I had the time to help but I don't seem to have much spare time anymore.
I am wondering if this is a year round project.
Our church women group knit Teddies for Tragedies year round and these are sent to third world countries like Haiti and other countries.. The Teddies are put in colorful cloth bags with a safe pull cord. These kids have nothing to call their own and cherish these little Teddies. It helps the sick kids get better faster.
We send them by the staff at from the Rehab Center when they go to do volunteering acts of mercy. They bring artificial limbs for amputated kids. The limbs are packed in duffle bags and they pack Teddies around them as packing material to protect the artificial limbs.
There is a web site for Teddies for Tragedies where you can get the pattern and information related to this project.
